Extremely comfortable GlobaLab widgets allow you to create galleries of high precision, which you can see the status of the same tree observed on different days and in a few years.
For example, in this gallery were used the following settings:
First it was selected sorted by author, and then filtered only Moscow birch. As we approach the card can be very strong, it can be filtered down to the birch trees, which grow on a lawn. Eventually, up to a tree, behind which there is a systematic observation of the second year. Green point, of course, the three, but it is associated only with the precision pointing seat.
What conclusion can be drawn from this gallery? The first photographs belong to the past year: October 2, this birch was already fully colored with, and by October 14 had completely flown. A gallery at the end of the data for the current year: October 1, the same birch is still in a state of mass staining, ie about 50% of yellowed leaves. Perhaps this is due to the fact that in September 2014 was relatively warm, but the temperature never exceeded 20 ° C, and the average daily air temperature was 2-6 ° above, and sometimes all 8 ° FROM. Maybe warmer in September led to a slow onset of autumn leaves colorization.
Let's try to look at the trees in the neighborhood. September 22, 2014 in the crowns of birch trees, which grow from the previous tree just a few dozen meters, were highly visible yellow strands. Yellow leaves much was evident and the tree got the status of "mass colorization autumn leaves." In 2015, August 25 was marked by a single strand of yellow, which has since crumbled safely. October 1, 2015 (more than a week later than last year's data) birch look completely green and still are in the stage of the beginning of the autumn leaves colorization.
It seems that our hypothesis about the influence of the warm September, the state confirmed birches.
Watching birches began in August, and will only be completed by the end of October, and can be somewhere and later. However, in this study, we have a rare opportunity to assess the state of birch trees over a wide area in a single day (or at least for a brief time period) thanks to the participants of the September simultaneous still image. Let us look at the birch in autumn equinox!
Applying a filter to the image gallery Sort by date and latitude, we see different colors of the birch is completely yellowed and green, from the northern to the most southern.
Most birches by this time entered the stage of the beginning of the autumn coloring of leaves and birch from Muravlenko already fully turned yellow.
Our members are willing to continue to monitor the birches to fully capture all of the changes that occur with them this fall.
Let's share your observations in the comments to this article Diary of a researcher.
Perhaps we should explain why start such a bright autumn given project if not yet had time to finish the school holidays when the kids frantically dogulivat recent weeks, and even on the calendar August - the third month of summer ...
In nature, as we know, your calendar, and the beginning of a new season, nature is not the number reported in the paper or on the screen, and certain events. The most important boundary of the summer and fall - is the emergence in the crowns of birches, lindens, elms first yellow leaves. This is particularly evident at the birches, they painted some branches like golden strands in green curls.
This is what we observed in Moscow on 17 August, when the calendar before the formal end of the summer there were still two weeks.
If you look closely, you'll see the first yellow lock in the crown of the birch.
It does not lag behind her and lime in a neighboring yard ...
And already the first yellow leaves and there, here and there on the grass on the tracks. And the next day, Aug. 18 in the morning went to the real autumn rain: shallow, obnoxious, and sown is sown with low overcast sky ... seems not really get soaked by a drizzle, but still sad. Not that the summer rain, which is powerless against the rain, but it can easily wait for the nearest roof and pools disappear after an hour ...
So with the new autumn you, dear participants of the project!
If the same participants are watching the same tree and fill in the project several profiles corresponding to the achievement of different phenophases, the gallery of images drawn a very interesting picture. We can sort the pictures by author then birch one point - from the same website aligned together. When this is clearly seen as the tree has passed from the beginning of the autumn coloration of leaves to complete defoliation. Each photo is marked the date, so you can immediately estimate how many days it took and compare it with those of other participants. It is also known that the individual terms of seasonal development are very different for each tree. For example, near my home on October 10, there is one full birch in autumn colored and half leafless, two colored and two half just started changing colors of the leaves. And the trees grow in pairs, each pair has one hard-yellowing, and the second is just starting to turn yellow. Individual researcher must either watch from a lot of trees, which is much more difficult, or only one tree, but then it was strictly a tree year after year. Teaming up on the Global Lab, we have the opportunity to observe a smaller number of trees each, as long as there were a lot of participants in each city.
We have chosen for our autumn freeze-frame is birch, despite the fact that the fall of a single tree more beautiful than another, by chance! It turns out that the beginning of autumn phenology believe the day will appear in the crown of the first yellow birch strands. After all, this tree is very unusual yellow leaves: from whole branches. The results of our still image clearly shows that the spread of autumn events is very large: thus in Kurgan, which is closer to the south, on birches hardly appeared yellow strands in Moscow birch heyday half, and the more northern Yamal - birch is completely yellowed. Guys from Muravlenko very sincerely talked about their Birches. Now it is important to continue our observations of the same birches and complete project data when all the trees are fully acquire the autumn color of leaves and defoliation completely.
