Dear participants of the project! Share information about how things are with tick activity in your areas of residence in August / September of this year? My personal observations are to the north-west of Moscow and Tver region near the town of Rzhev. In Moscow in August was not seen a single tick on the very active dog that is constantly running through the tall grass and bushes (a walk in the park "Northern Tushino" and the surrounding area). At the same time in August in the Tver region traditionally turned out to be "fruitful". After a walk in the fields of mites crawling on the body and have to shoot yourself and the dog. The trip in late August resulted in the following: a dozen ticks from two people (the last found at home on the sweater) and heels ticks dog. Suck is not detected, as the dog was treated with acaricidal agent.
The maximum life span of females forest mite is 760 - 780 days, that is about 26 months. Approximately half the time (13 - 14 months) carried mites inactive - Postmolting development in the first autumn of life and two winters. Duration of periods of active life was approximately 180 days in 2003 (the first period activity) and about 220 days in 2004 (the second period of activity), the sum - About 400 days or 13 months. According to the observations of previous years season sucking ticks in Moscow begins in mid-April and ends in late October - early November. The first cases (2 - in 2010 and 1 - in 2009, 2010, 2012) have been reported during the 15th week.
Our study focuses on the spread of ticks. These arthropods are dangerous not only for dogs, but for the people - they carry encephalitis virus and bacteria that cause Lyme disease (Lyme disease). Various organizations are monitoring the situation to spread mites and publish the data. In Russia, this problem has been CPS. This link
Interactive exploration of tick activity is carried out not only on our site, but Rod Eylandt University (USA). To study the problems created a resource http://www.tickencounter.org/, which presented a lot of interesting features: interactive determinant species of mites, distribution map, blog discussions, etc. The resource is not only educational, but also a truly crowdsourcing : every person faced with a tick (on yourself or pet) are invited to participate in the mapping http://www.tickencounter.org/,
If you look at the resulting on April 11, 2014 the map of distribution of ticks in Moscow and Moscow region, it turns out that most "affluent" areas are the west and north-west. I wonder whether this trend will, when the study will be attended by several hundred people? We will monitor the situation. Do not forget to handle pets means of fleas and ticks.
Dear breeders! April was very close, the sun warms the objects of our attention - ticks - are beginning to wake up from "hibernation." After a long rest, they are active, hungry and ready to hunt. So do not forget about purchasing agents against ticks for our pets - Front Line Sanoflay, Prazitsid, Advantix, Advocate, Bars, etc., the choice is great. Prevention and prophylaxis again!
See a few more photos of ticks taken with an electron microscope, it is possible to link http://www.cvbd.org/en/media-gallery/photos/. There you can see pictures of other ectoparasites of animals and humans, fleas, lice and other.
Biologists from Germany and the US have photographed the process of tick bite in microscopic detail, and set how animals manage to gain a foothold in the skin of the victim. The research is published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. As victims, scientists have provided the tick Ixodes ricinus slumber mouse. The process was monitored by camera with macro lens. Itself mouthparts examined using a scanning microscope. It turned out that the penetration into the skin takes place in several stages. First two jagged chelicerae ("jaws" arachnids) alternately move back and forth, gradually going deeper in the skin. Then, after about 30 such movements tick simultaneously pulling them back. As a result of chelicerae are bent in a V-shaped fork and pierce the skin of the animal gipostomu - covered back pointy spikes "harpoon". After the process between Hypostoma and chelicerae formed channel on which and moves the bloodstream. This mechanism explains why the tick can be fixed very tightly in the skin of mammals. Double-pointed tool set allows mite burrows into the skin gradually, as gipostoma introduced only after snug chelicerae. It is known that an attempt to remove the spider, its mouthparts usually remains in the skin. Described by scientists mechanism may, however, differ from those used by other types of mites. It has been shown that some of them use a special cement material for fixing the skin of the host. Ticks, which became the subject of research, such substances are not present. After a rainy September October pleases comfortable temperature and sunny days. Of course, the weather - a great reason to go to the country, to take a walk in the park or the nearby forest belt. Some participants in our study did so - went to the cottage in the Tver region. The first is a short walk to the fields on the outskirts of the village finished counting the ticks removed from the dog's coat and with his own clothes. With two people and two dogs from ticks removed eight: seven individuals of a species Ixodes ricinus (dog tick) and one individual suspected species Dermacentor reticulatus (meadow tick). Another mite was later found in a house. Be careful when you walk: Clamp opened the autumn hunting season! Do not forget to handle the animals acaricide, and for your safety, prevention: to dress properly for a walk in the woods, carefully examine the body, clothes and hair after a walk.
Seasonal activity - a phenomenon quite common in the animal world. Peak activity ticks falls on spring time: the first heat "entices" arthropod hunting. But the higher the temperature becomes, the less comfortable feel pincers so midsummer their activity is quite low. The second peak of activity occurs at the end of August and September, when the temperature decreases, and the rains. In 4-5 weeks, these dog owners need to take action to protect pets from the attack of mites (acaricide treatment). If you plan to walk in the forest, the preventive measures must be followed for all participants, and for dogs and humans. Enjoy the beautiful autumn and sometimes not get sick!
