03/31/15 in the Rostov region g.Tsimlyanske held municipal stage of the regional competition of projects students "Young Russia". Student of class 10 MBOU Lyceum №1 Xenia Bobrova won, making a project "Toxic waste: batteries".
Xenia work was based on the materials of the project: project general information, content profiles of participants, the article "Diary of researchers' comments to these articles and results of the project in the form of charts and diagrams. On each battery is labeled: do not throw in the trash. And what to do with used batteries? In our town there is no battery collection points, and all the people throw batteries in the trash. Than it can be dangerous? And as is the case in other cities? How people relate to the problem of disposing of batteries? To answer these questions, we decided to develop the project "Toxic waste: batteries".
The project was developed on a platform of Global Lab and published December 24, 2014. And by March 21, 2015 participated in the project 128 people from across the country!
Geography of the project: Petrozavodsk, Izhevsk, Yekaterinburg, Tyumen, Astrakhan, Nadim, Dzerzhinsk, Mari El Republic, the Republic of Kalmykia, Republic of Karelia, Saratov, Kostroma, Tula, Rostov region.

Project goal: to explore people's attitudes to the problem of disposing of toxic waste - batteries and identify examples of good practices in solving problems and draw people's attention to the need for special disposal of toxic waste.
Hypothesis: most people throw away toxic waste such as used batteries in the trash. This is because people do not understand the need for their special waste and do not know what to do with used batteries in their place of residence.
Objectives of the project:
1. On the basis of the platform GlobalLab gather information about the presence or absence of disposal of toxic waste - batteries.
2. To analyze the information and identify examples of good practices in solving the problem.
3. To study the scientific basis of the problem: the causes and mechanisms of the dangers of environmental impact.
4. Conduct outreach with students of the Lyceum (discussions in classes) and the population of the city (posters).
5. Arrange a meeting with representatives of the Administration Tsimlyansk district on the issue of the project.
6. To create the conditions for the implementation of the most effective experience in solving this problem in the city.
The theoretical part
Referring to information sources, we found that the risk of batteries is that they contain heavy metals.
Batteries - a chemical source of electric current. Among household batteries are the most common salt and alkaline batteries (others - zinc air, mercury-zinc, silver and zinc, lithium - are very rare).
In a battery with the electrolyte salt used passive coal and manganese dioxide, the electrolyte therein serves as ammonium chloride, cathode - zinc. They are not designed for serious load used in remote controls, clocks, radio, toys, electronic thermometer (devices, power consumption which keeps tens of milliamps) and lamps with low power consumption.
Batteries with alkaline electrolyte or manganese batteries referred to as "alkaline" batteries («alkaline» from English - lye). They use an alkaline electrolyte (potassium hydroxide), the positive pole includes manganese dioxide and negative - of zinc powder (used in salt zinc housing elements). Alkaline batteries have a long shelf life and are designed for serious burden.
Consequently, batteries contain compounds of heavy metals such as zinc, mercury, manganese, and others. It is very dangerous to living things matter. At the landfill metal housing battery is destroyed by external environmental factors for a year or two. As a result, ions of heavy metals into the soil and groundwater. Scientists claim that a battery with heavy metals contaminate 20 square meters of land.
From aqueous solutions of heavy metals soil fall into plants in organisms of animals. Groundwater they are washed into water. Thus, the pollution of drinking water sources, contamination of food. The consequences of such processes to fully manifest gradually in the form of disturbance to ecosystems.
Environmentalists around the world urge people to a reasonable solution of the problem disposing of used batteries. Many countries already have experience in organizing the collection of used batteries at special collection points, which are located in supermarkets. Collected batteries is transmitted to specialized plants for processing.
Recycling batteries - is a complex process. In our country, there are battery recycling plant in Chelyabinsk "Megapolisresurs." That's where they get used batteries that people sit in paragraphs priema.Za change here recycle up to 2 tons of batteries.
Thus, manganese sulfate, which is obtained by processing, as used for the prevention microfertilizer leaf chlorosis. When the disease is completely discolored chlorotic leaves and green veins remain only.
Zinc sulfate - this drug. When applied topically it has antiseptic, astringent, dried and local anti-inflammatory effect.
Another obtained graphite which is used as a lubricant for friction parts with solid surfaces. Electrodes made of graphite crucibles, the graphite blocks.
Metal housing batteries - this steel, it can also be reused.
Analysis of data collected from participants in the project
When analyzing the results of the project, we saw that the majority of participants (87.2%) understand the significance of the problem and find the solution to disposing of batteries important. However, the majority of participants (73.5%) dispose waste batteries in the trash.
Comparing these data, we concluded that in many localities, as well, and we have, there is no organized system for the collection of waste batteries.
We can also note that in many Russian schools teachers give talks and organize campaigns to collect batteries. Sometimes participants noted that they had learned about the problem of the media. There are answers that have learned about the problem through our project.
Examples effectively address this issue were presented to the participants from Kazan, Petrozavodsk, Tyumen. We learned that in the big cities receiving batteries made during the actions and has permanent collection points in major shopping centers such as «Media Markt», «Eldorado», «IKEA».
For us it was the most appropriate experience of pupils from the village of Mining Belokalitvenskyi District Rostov region. The guys organized the collection of batteries in school, and export the collected material to Rostov (200 km) took over the firm Alcoa.

The conclusions of the project
We believe that the hypothesis of the project is partially confirmed.
Most people (73.5% of participants) emit toxic waste such as used batteries in the trash. Many people do not know what to do with used batteries in their place of residence.
However, the result of the project indicates that the majority of participants (87.2%) understand the significance of the problem and consider it important. In large settlements organized collection of batteries on the basis of shopping centers «Media Markt», «Eldorado" and others. In the small towns of battery collection in most cases not.
Conclusion: The essential organization of collection of waste batteries in small settlements and removal of waste collected.
So, given the experience of participants in the project, we decided to contact the organization "Rostov - city of the future" in order to investigate the possibility of removal of the collected batteries.
However, turning through the group VKontakte, we got no answer, but found information about promotions to collect batteries for í. Impossible for us to take part in such actions because of the large distance from Rostov. Need transportation. At the weekend to organize such removal is almost impossible.
As a result, we decided to seek the support of the Head of the urban settlement Tsimlyansk Polyakov Vitaly Borisovich. Get support and warranty on the organization of export collected batteries, we organized at the Lyceum point for batteries.

However, the main issues of the project so far is alarming. Most of the participants did not know what to do with used batteries. This issue has not been resolved in many regions of the country, because the participants noted their willingness and desire to take the toxic waste at collection points. We continue to work on the project! It is possible that the experience of the guys from Tomsk on the organization of collection of batteries in the school will be used in other regions. The boys collect batteries at school and transported them to the nearest collection point.
