Earth Days
“May there only be peaceful and cheerful Earth Days to come for our beautiful Spaceship Earth…” U.N. Secretary-General U Thant on March 21, 1971.

April 22nd is not just a day of big celebration -it is a date set aside around the globe as an official opportunity to show appreciation for our special world- it is Earth Day.
On April 22, 1970 American senator Gaylord Nelson organized a group of students who advocated for the protection of the environment. Their goal was to save earth’s climate. This same student movement later spread across the United States and then around the world. Today, this day, Earth Day, is recognized internationally. It provides a platform for disseminating information about ecocatastrophes and spreads the news that every person can contributetoward saving the planet’s ecology. All of us need to be resp onsible for the state of environment around us. In 2009 the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution proclaiming April 22nd Earth Day. On this day everybody on the planet should remember that the Earth is our common home and it needs to be kept in good, healthy working order.
There are two main times Earth Day is celebrated globally: in March around the vernal equinox and on April 22nd participate in a number of activities dedicated to Earth Day around the summer solstice. This later date takes advantage of the warmer weather and people’s summer vacation time. But shouldn’t every day be a day for stewarding and respecting our home planet Earth?
Let’s join in what many are doing around the world and together help our planet!
