Part 1: Gathering data from seismometers Start monitoring earthquakes on a weekly basis over one month period. Fill in your report for every week (Week 1, Week 2, Week 3 and Week 4). What is the activity like? Did you detect anything unusual? Are any earthquakes possibly coming from a volcanic activity? Make a monthly report and exchange your data with other schools. Can you think of ways to put in place an early warning system for citizens?
Part 2: Safety measures Make a research in your town about safety and precaution measures that are already in place regarding citizen protection from such natural phenomena. Are the safety and precaution measures in your town sufficient? Are the citizens informed adequately? Do they know what to do in the case of a strong earthquake? Share your finding with your affiliated schools. Discuss with the students from other schools what would be the best way to raise awareness among the citizens of your area.
Part 3: Local history Have there been any historic events in your area that involve a natural phenomenon like a strong earthquake, a volcanic eruption or a tsunami which affected the local community? Make a presentation about it and share it with the other schools.
